General Summary (Purpose) of Position
As an active member of the University Advancement Leadership Gifts Team, the Director of Annual Giving will have the responsibility for the design and implementation of creative mail, phone and email campaigns and programs to increase the University’s alumni giving rate and expand unrestricted giving. The Director of Annual giving will have specific responsibility for strengthening the University’s Circle of Distinction, UMass Lowell’s annual fund leadership giving society (gifts of $1000 and over per year). The Director will also be responsible for designing stewardship programs and events to recognize leadership donors supporting the University.
Examples of Duties:
1. Develop and facilitate a pattern of lifetime support for the University of Massachusetts Lowell for annual donors by:
• Designing and implementing a comprehensive program for annual giving, including The Lowell Fund.
• Preparing a detailed fiscal year plan and fully coordinated solicitation calendar.
• Setting goals and developing appropriate segmentation strategies to increase percent and level of participation; including renewal, lapsed, acquisition campaigns, and leadership gift initiatives.
• Personalizing design of leadership giving appeals.
• Reinforcing logical gift club structure and compelling donor recognition program.
• Supervising preparation of appropriate solicitation and recognition materials through all phases of annual giving campaign.
• Establishing and maintaining tracking and testing methods for all solicitation initiatives.
• Maintaining financial accounting of annual fund progress detailing results toward quantitative benchmarks.
2. Work with other members of the University Advancement Team by:
• Integrating planning with Major Gift officers by targeting donors for upgrades to major gift program.
• Participating as a senior member of the Leadership Gifts Team
• Overseeing tracking of next steps for key donor prospects in the moves management process.
• Updating the Lowell Leadership Giving Pool.
• Identifying new prospects for the pool.
• Coordinating support systems for annual giving with the Director of Information and Donor Services; including receipting and acknowledging gifts, recordkeeping, and reporting.
• Organizing corporate matching gifts program.
• Designing and implementing reunion giving programs in conjunction with Major Gifts Officers and alumni volunteer leadership.
• Targeting opportunities integrating recognition and/or stewardship objectives into local, regional, and national alumni event and activities in conjunction with the Director of Alumni Affairs.
3. Provide leadership in the development of staff and specialized programs by:
• Overseeing the responsibility of Assistant Director of The Lowell Fund to successfully manage Phonathons and assigned direct mail programs.
• Facilitating involvement of relevant staff, internal partners, and external volunteers in executing special events, donor relations programs supporting specific cultivation, recognition, and stewardship objectives for top donor prospects.
• Coordinating and executing all special events targeted at donor stewardship and/or recognition honoring all leadership donors.
• Developing creative acknowledgment and recognition of donors through correspondence, printed materials, and university publications.
• Supervising the production of the Annual Donor Honor Roll.
4. Promote the University’s commitment to customer service by:

• Ensuring optimum service to all internal and external partners in response to all requests for service and information.
• Maintaining an environment that is welcoming to persons of all backgrounds, nationalities, and roles.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Baccalaureate or higher degree
• 6 to 8 years experience in annual giving, membership and/or direct marketing programs.
• Demonstrated experience implementing successful direct mail and leadership giving society programs.
• Experienced in staff supervision and in working as part of a collaborative team.
• Established knowledge of fund-raising principles and process of cultivating prospects.
• Proficiency with computer office and development software systems.
• Demonstrated ability organizing, managing, and prioritizing multiple projects and programs.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to interact effectively with staff and campus representatives.
• Willingness to travel regionally and on occasion nationally.
• Commitment to succeed in very visible and highly measurable position.
• Affinity with overall mission of University of Massachusetts Lowell.
