Description:

General Summary (Purpose) of Position
Enhance the commercialization of intellectual property (IP) resulting from research at University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) by interacting with researchers and other individuals involved in licensing and commercialization of technology.

Examples of Duties:
1. Promote the University’s goal of expanding technology commercialization by:
• Working proactively with faculty, staff and students on matters related to intellectual property resulting from research.
• Supporting the administration of UML’s IP Policy.
• Soliciting and receiving invention disclosures.
• Assisting faculty and staff in determining the ability to protect IP.
• Performing market analyses to determine commercial potential of faculty and student submitted inventions and technologies.
• Performing patentability assessment of inventions disclosures.
• Locating and organizing detailed information about invention for marketing purposes and actively promoting the inventions
• Identifying potential licensees.
• Working with others in CVIP and licensing counsel to draft and negotiate appropriate agreements.

2. Promote the University’s commitment to customer service by:
• Working to promote technology transfer and assisting Director in the development and maintenance of a strong customer focused partnership.
• Building effective partnerships with co-workers throughout the University by freely sharing appropriate information and providing assistance when needed.
• Ensuring optimum service to all internal and external partners in response to all requests for service and information.
• Maintaining an environment that is welcoming to persons of all backgrounds, nationalities, and roles.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Undergraduate degree in engineering, preferably, chemical/bio or electrical physics.
• MBA preferred.
• Minimum three years experience in licensing, negotiations and creative problem solving.
• Demonstrated experience in business plan preparation and review.
• Strong sales and marketing skills.
• Demonstrated writing and interpersonal communications skills.
• Demonstrated experience in public relations and media relations.
• Demonstrated understanding of budgets and cash flow.
• Skill in coaching and mentoring entrepreneurs.
• Ability to manage a significant case load and work in a complex and evolving environment.
• Ability to perform market research.
• Must be resourceful in terms of computer databases and be fluent in Internet searches.
• Must be able to work independently and under minimal supervision; and manage multiple projects simultaneously from inception to completion.
• Strong organizational and program management skills.
• Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to interact effectively and productively with faculty, office colleagues, university administrators, patent attorneys, other university licensing professionals and industry representatives.
