General Summary (Purpose) of Position
The Assistant Director enhances the management of Career Services administrative practices and systems to further develop service effectiveness and successful initiatives. The Assistant Director provides both direct Career Counseling and, with the Director, oversight of career counseling activities and special projects.
Examples of Duties:
1. Provide program development services by:
• Collaborating with campus constituencies, particularly faculty, staff and students to forward the message and mission of the career office.
• Collaborating with Admissions, Academic Colleges and Departments, Graduate School, Continuing Education and Alumni Affairs, identifying and implementing web-based information sharing to meet the needs of students, parents, employers and other University clients and constituencies.
• Identifying, targeting and developing relationships with employers and organizations that will contribute to the career development of UML students through full time, part time, co-op, internship and summer job opportunities.
• Assisting with the administration of co-op and other experiential programs.
2. Provide management assistance in Career Services by:
• Assisting Director in the collection and reporting of relevant information to internal and external constituencies.
• Recommending changes, enhancements and new initiatives to the Director based on based on lessons learned by colleagues at other institutions, professional experiences, conference participation, journals and other relevant resources.
• Developing new information sources/reports to support development of new initiatives.
• Writing and maintaining web site content.
3. Participate in marketing initiatives by:
• Assist in identifying, creating and implementing strategies to market the Office of Career Services to Students, Alumni, Faculty, Staff and Employers.
• Educating students and alumni on services provided.
• Assisting in information management including dissemination of job, internship and program information to students and alumni.
4. Recommend and collaborate with Career Staff and Director specific strategies for the advancement of technology by:
• Identifying applications of technologies to further the mission of the Career office toward its goals.
• Utilizing a variety of technologies to effectively market services in an efficient, dynamic and ongoing manner.
• Researching and recommending appropriate technologies to enhance career services operations and achieve goals.
5. Provide Career Counseling by:
• Advising and coaching students and alumni on a wide range of career issues including job search strategies, self-assessment and career decision making.
• Assisting students and alumni in developing their job, experiential education and graduate school search tools and skills.
• Developing and maintaining employer relationships, alumni relationships and staying current with employment trends.
• Developing and presenting career skills workshops and seminars to students, alumni and faculty.
• Providing guidance, as needed or requested, to other career services professionals.
6. Demonstrate the University’s commitment to customer service and continuous improvement by:
• Serving as actively contributing member of the Career Services Department.
• Ensuring optimum customer service for all requests for service and information.
• Building effective partnerships with co-workers through out the University by freely sharing appropriate information and providing assistance when needed.
• Actively participating in University wide initiatives through committee participation.
• Maintaining an atmosphere that is welcoming to persons of all backgrounds, nationalities, beliefs, and roles.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Masters degree in counseling, student personnel services, guidance or related field and eight or more years of related professional experience.
• Certification to administer and counsel clients using MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) or equivalent instrument.
• Demonstrated successful experience using Collage to maintain and update website.
• 3 to 5 year’s previous experience with a diverse and multicultural student population within higher education preferred.
• Demonstrated presentation, communication, writing, planning, problem solving, and organizational skills.
• Customer service orientation.
• A thorough understanding of UMass Lowell's student population and academic programs in order to educate and inform the employment community about potential candidates.
• Proven ability to interface and collaborate effectively with other areas within the University.
• Proficiency in the use of computer technology used to support the delivery of career services.
Supervision Received: Reports to the Director of Career Services.
