Scholarly Interests

Asst. Prof. Silverman is interested in the intersections of music and cultural context and visual culture and expository writing, as well as the changing nature of journalism. 

Bio Sketch

Jonathan Silverman's primary teaching and research fields are journalism and American Studies with secondary interests in composition, visiual culture, and American popular music. He is the co-author, with Dean Rader, of "The World is a Text" (Prentice Hall); the third edition has just been published. He is currently working on "Nine Choices: Johnny Cash and American Culture" for the University of Massachusetts Press, and he recently served as a Fulbright Roving Scholar in American Studies in Norway, speaking about American culture to Norwegian high school teachers and students.
