Members of the School of Health and Environment (SHE) recently hosted 80 students from Lawrence High’s School of Health and Human Services at an event in which they described educational opportunities at UMass Lowell and careers in healthcare.
Lawrence High School is made up of six independent high schools that specialize in different subject areas. Students choose which school they want to attend and which course of study they wish to follow. Students who attend the School of Health and Human Services have expressed an early interest in pursuing studies and careers in health.
During their day-long tour, they were welcomed by Hector Torres, director of College Prep, at the Hispanic Heritage Month Speaking Series. From there, they participated in a presentation by SHE at which Interim Dean Kay Doyle addressed the students and introduced members of the department.
Asst. Prof. Lisa Abdallah talked about careers in nursing. “If you are looking for a career where you will be filled with pride, have job security and be respected, consider nursing,” said Abdallah.
Assoc. Prof. Nicole Champagne discussed careers in community health while Prof. Gene Rogers talked about careers in medical technology. One of Roger’s students, Aaron Stella, talked about his experiences as a graduate from the B.S. program and as a current M.S. student and teaching assistant in physiological chemistry.
Following the presentation and lunch hosted by SHE, the students attended a presentation by the Admissions office. Michael Belcher, director of Outreach and Recruitment, talked to the group about the application process, criteria and campus life.
The students closed out their day with a tour of the Campus Recreation Center.
