Hoopfest a ‘Smashing Success’

The women’s basketball team is ready to do its thing at Hoopfest.

Following a NE-10 soccer game in October, hundreds of students gathered at Costello Gym for the First Annual Hoop Fest. It was an opportunity to kick off the basketball season, and it fed a campus spirit that has seen student crowds at athletic events growing larger than ever before.

“This was one of the most enjoyable student events I’ve witnessed in a long time,” said Dana Skinner, Director of Athletics. “Our first annual Hoopfest has been a smashing success.” 

Students were entertained by a succession of student bands as they joined in shooting games, raffles, trivia games, a spirit contest for the wildest River Hawk outfit, a game between students and UMass Lowell coaches, and free pizza and popcorn.  Students won cash, Celtics tickets, lots of UMass Lowell merchandise and gift certificates to local hair salons and eateries.  

The event was jointly sponsored by Athletics and the Office of Student Activities and Multicultural Affairs.
