UMass System "Transform" Ad

Gov. Deval Patrick cites the transformative power of education and describes the University of Massachusetts as “the launching pad for so many success stories,” in the University’s new television advertisement, titled “Transform.”

“As governor, I’m so pleased to know that UMass is transforming lives, shaping our future and providing hope,” Patrick says in the 30-second ad, which was filmed on the University’s Amherst campus.

The new ad, the successor to the University’s Emmy-winning “Something to be Proud Of” ad, will air in the Boston and Springfield television markets through the end of November.

New River Hawks Ad

The University of Massachusetts Lowell will begin running television ads to promote the 2007-2008 hockey season.  Developed by creative director Keith Lane, the Discovery Channel-style ad is titled “The River Hawk.”  Lane has received more than 400 national and international creative awards and has done work for the NHL, Fox Sports, Hockey East, Puma and Franklin Sports.

“The River Hawk” features UML hockey action mixed with actual footage of a River Hawk.  The ads will appear on the New England Sports Network (NESN) from Oct. 19-27, and can be seen during NESN’s a.m. Sports Desk, on the Globe 10.0 show, and during the Boston Bruins pre-game shows.  The ad will also appear on the University’s athletic website, goriverhawks.com and YouTube.

Radio Ads for Open House

UML advertises the Oct. Open House on the three most popular teen radio stations in the Boston market – KISS 108, WAAF and JMN 94.5. All three stations run a two-week schedule of 30-second recorded ads and 10-second live promos for a total of nealy 60 spots on KISS and WAAF and more than 50 on JMN. Ads, which are concentrated in morning drive time and late afternoon and evening hours, focus on the breadth of academic choices available at UMass Lowell, as well as giving date, time, place and the web address for additional information about the Open House.

Assistive Technology: A Capstone Experience that Builds Skills and Compassion

The Assistive Technology Program has been an integral element of the undergraduate experience in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at UMass Lowell since 1991. The capstone design experience challenges each senior to apply their technical knowledge to design, build and deliver a device that assists a person with a mental and/or physical disability. The program, which matches each senior with a client, serves a variety of education and societal purposes.

The results of this program have been profound for both students and clients. In many cases, clients find themselves with life-changing improvements in their mobility or ability to communicate. Our students graduate with a greater appreciation of the potential society impact of their new profession.  Both of these benefits are captured in Anna’s story

Busy Conference Schedule Provides Promotional Opportunity for UML

Seven conferences sponsored by UMass Lowell in April created an unusually good opportunity to provide a snapshot of some wide-ranging expertise – and to tell the world about it. During the first two weeks of the month, UML ran a promotional campaign on WBZ and WBUR radio. A combination of 15- and 30-second spots were aired throughout each day, with a concentration on morning drive time. Three versions of the ads are posted below.
WBZ 15 seconds
WBZ 30 seconds
WBUR 30 seconds

On March 14, 2007, acting on the recommendation of President Jack M. Wilson, the University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees selected U.S. Rep. Martin T. Meehan as the new Chancellor of UMass Lowell.

About 1,000 people gathered on a warm Saturday in mid-December 2006 to attend the U.S. Rep. Marty Meehan-sponsored event, “Climate Change: Local Solutions to a Global Crisis,” where Gov.-Elect Deval Patrick, true to form, offered an ounce of hope with his prescription for change in addressing global warming at a standing-room-only town meeting in Durgin Hall. Local news coverage included CBS4 and Boston's CW The 10 O'Clock News.

See UML from the Sky: Flyover Video

In the fall of 2005, the campus created three TV ads that ran on local network affiliate stations during January. During the making of those ads, the office of Public Affairs contracted for flyover footage of the campus. Several seconds of that video were used in the TV ads. The final one-and-a-half minutes of edited footage is being screened on the HAWKi information system monitors throughout campus and on the web.

After scheduling and re-scheduling several times, the right conditions -- with both weather and personnel --  finally appeared on Oct. 20. At 3 p.m., the pilot, the cinematographer and the assistant camera person took off. They flew for two and a half hours, shot 1,200 feet of film (approximately 33 minutes worth), and landed twice to re-load film.
